Well this is devastating to learn this afternoon. The Sydney based Toy & Game Expo has been canceled, due it seems to a lack of engagement and support from industry backers.

The Toy & Game Expo was THE event in the tabletop gaming arena here in Australia, with exhibitors from all over the world demonstrating their games. They also ran the Protospiel, where devs could playtest their games and get advice on seeing it to publication. Needless to say this is a huge blow.

We have sad news.

It is with deep regret that we announce we will not be running the Toy and Game Expo in 2015. We appreciate all of the efforts that people have made in committing to the show as participants, volunteers and exhibitors. With just under 6000 people attending in 2014, significant media exposure and heaps of kids having fun, we believe we created an awesome event for adults and children alike.

As an innovative small family business, we have underwritten the substantial time and financial investment of the first three years of the Expo. We have always been committed to bringing Sydney the best event possible, but we have come to realise that many companies involved in the industry do not share that outlook, and without their engagement and support it has become impossible to commit to a long-term Expo in its current form.

This is not the end, only a period of change. There were three arms to the Expo – toys, hobbies and gaming – and we still want to pursue ideas in the hobbies and gaming areas. Over the next six months we will engage with the Australian tabletop community to determine what needs are not currently met by Australian gaming events, and will determine how to develop a series of events to fill those needs. Meanwhile, we will involve our hobbies partners through a new annual event – the Big Boys Toys Expo, which opens in Canberra this August.

Thank you to all who have been part of Toy and Game Expo. We enjoyed bringing you the show, and we can’t wait to bring you something new.

The Expo was due to take place later this year. On a brighter note, the organizers have stated they are looking at ways to bring the event back in a new form in 2016. Fingers crossed!
