Best Horror Board Games for Halloween

It’s Halloween! And whilst our editor-in-chief swans around California doing all manner of Halloween things (and no doubt taking in US game stores so make sure you follow us on Instagram and Twitter as she’ll be posting there), we’re here looking at the best games for you to play tonight! Sure Halloween isn’t as huge in Australia as it is in the United States, but it is a damn good excuse to have a horror themed board game night.

These are our top games for Halloween games night, it’s not a comprehensive list of all the best horror tabletop games, just the ones we own and think are some of the best. If you want to add to it, just add your choices into the comments, we’d love to see them.

Betrayal at House on the Hill
We love this game and when the group playing are tabletop role-players, even better. You can really run with the horror theme on this one, the theme of which sees players exploring a haunted mansion (thus the name). Build up the mansion as you go. Among the players is a traitor, yes that’s right, one of the players is screwing over the rest of the party, all in a spooky old house. Get into the thematic nature of this one and it’s an absolute blast. Definitely a great Halloween game night game.

Eldritch Horror
Yes you knew we couldn’t have a top horror board games list and not have quite a few Cthulhu Mythos based games in it, because let’s face it tabletop gaming is pretty much overrun with old mate HP Lovecraft. Having said that, there are some great tabletop games in the mythos and “Eldritch Horror” is one. Players travel the world cooperatively trying to smite those evil mythos monsters before they take over the world. Close those portals and don’t go insane, that could seriously harm your chances of success… no one wants a dribbling danger on their team!

Elder Sign
Smashing little game, want something a little less involved than other big horror games, “Edler Sign” sees players taking on the roles of investogators – you guessed it – trying to stop those evil mythos monsters making their way through dimensional gates and taking over the world!! This is a dice-based game and one heck of a lot of fun, oh and you can go insane, because CTHULHU MYTHOS! Time is ticking people, give this one a try.

Arkham Horror
Oh good god, really? Three bloody Cthulhu Mythos games in a row? Are you kidding me? No, no we’re not kidding you, but you know what, these are great games, so we’d be remiss to not include them. It’s 1926 and you and your fellow players are investigating horrors on the streets of Arkham. You need to work together to stop one of the ancients entering the world and ruining everything for those pesky humans! Upgrade your characters so you can close portals and stop the dreaded evil. Oh and there’s lots of expansions. Get a good GM to read everything out and the atmosphere is awesome.

Mansions of Madness
Bare with! Good GOD! ANOTHER ONE? Well, yes, yes another one, but look at the bright side, board games are good if they’re good, so we should not be put off by such things as “another bloody Cthulhu Mythos game”. Arkham Massachusetts is a hive of scum, villainy and monsters that will send you insane, so you’d better damn well work together or we’re screwed, all of us, absolutely screwed. One players is the games master in charge of the monsters, the rest, brave investigators.. that’s you by the way.

Kingsport Festival
It’s err… Cthulhu mythos. So yeah. Our group generally want to play this more than the others, but that’s entirely up to you. Cultists, cultists everywhere and that’s where this one differs, you are playing the evil cultists, as opposed to the investigators. IF (that’s IF) you’re playing this one with tabletop role-players as opposed to baord gamers, you’ll have loads of fun (we certainly do whenever it hits the table).

Honourable Mentions: Dead of Winter, Till Dawn, Last Night on Earth, City of Horror, Fury of Dracula, Level 7 Omega Protocol, Mysterium, Ghost Stories and to a lesser extent Werewolf if you’re looking for something for a LOT of players.
