Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow’s Walk expansion coming via Avalon Hill
Mike Selinker is a force of nature. In the midst of developing, kickstarting, and releasing big projects Selinker also writes on the gaming industry, designs puzzles, and runs his own game company Lone Shark Games. Currently he has been working toward the release of his latest adventure card game Apocrypha, a horror themed design utilising many of the mechanics from his Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. Yet in the midst of ongoing projects today has seen the release of Selinkerâs first ever expansion for one of his early successes, Betrayal at the House on the Hill.
Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow’s Walk expansion – All we can think about is The Witch from Left 4 Dead. You?
Released by Avalon Hill, Betrayal at House on the Hill has been highly regarded for its use of tile laying, character interaction, and traitor mechanism interwoven into creative horror genre stories. The game has had a lot of success and despite being republished has yet to see an expansion until now.
In interviews and at conventions Selinker has brushed off the idea of creating an expansion for this game stating that âBetrayal is in the pastâ, and he âlives in the futureâ. So how did an expansion of Betrayal become part of the ânowâ for Selinker? It appears that his current project Apocrypha is to blame. In an interview with Geek Dad, Selinker said his creative team on Apocrypha were enjoying the horror theme so much they began trying to convince him to revisit Betrayal.
There are elements to this story that resonate very strongly with Selinkerâs design process and may have proved irresistible for him. Firstly Selniker completed this whole project in secret. For the months this game was being developed and play tested he had fake project names and the two hundred staff working on the expansion sworn to secrecy. Today is the first anyone in the gaming industry outside of that 200 hundred staff have heard about the project. Secondly, Selinker brought the best of his collaborative efforts together to create something bigger than himself.
New cards in Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow’s Walk
One of the marks Selinker has left on the industry is that he is not a solitary genius, but works to help release the creative potential of others. This game was written with over 40 collaborators hosting such names as Peter Adkison co-founder of Wizards of the Coast, Liz Spain, co-designer on Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, Christopher Badell designer of Sentinels of the Multiverse, Eli Halpern designer of Cards Against Humanity, Zoe Quinn designer of the significant game Depression Quest, and a list of many more that includes not just game designers, but writers such as Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward and musician Angela Webber.
The expansion will contain 20 new rooms including a whole new floor, new monsters, 30 new cards, all in addition to the 50 new haunts. The expansion is set for release just before Halloween (of course) on October 14th.
