Gen Con 2016 5 Most Anticipated Games
Gen Con is America's largest table top gaming convention drawing in crowds of over 60,000 attendees. For this reason it is the prime place for gaming companies to do game releases and promotion to the widest possible audience face to face. This year has a record breaking exhibitor attendance and over the four days we will see the most anticipated games hit tables, as well as have our appetites whet with promo games and prototypes. Unfortunately I will not be able to make it there myself. For the time being it will remain on my list of top five things I most want to do before I die. I will reveal the other four at a later date, in the meantime here are my top 5 games being released at Gen Con.
Gen Con, we’re Gen-Can’t this year, but we still follow closely.
5) Legendary Encounters: A Firefly Deck Building Game
Firefly exists as one of the most beloved television series in nerd culture. It was the first show to get a movie after cancellation as a response to the outpouring of the fan base. A show this loved could not avoid becoming a major I.P. for gaming companies. Unfortunately board game releases are yet to encapsulate the feel and flavour the show cultivated. I do not actually think the Legendary deck building mechanic will solve that problem, but I am a huge fan of the Alien and Predator games in this franchise, and I love Firefly. It seems that even if this is not the perfect match up, it is enough to make me eager to try it.
1-5 Players, Upper Deck Entertainment
Shiny! Legendary Encounters Firefly Deckbuilding Game
We recently did an interview with Rob Daviau about his latest release Seafall. Set in the age of sail this monster game is his latest offering using the Legacy system. Unlike previous games that would play out in an hour, Seafall takes 1.5-2 hours and contains around 15 sessions.
3-5 Players, Plaid Hat Games
Seafall, we are super excited for this and can’t wait to play it!
3) Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow's Walk
So this is not an actual game release, but I am very much looking forward to this expansion. Betrayal has been a favourite of mine for the last few years. It brings story and gameplay together in a fun and interactive way. Not knowing who will be the villain of each game adds to the excitement and tension. This expansion offers 50 new haunts, twenty new rooms and an entirely new floor to explore. Mike Selinker brings together a stellar cast of contributors for what is sure to be a hot ticket item.
3-6 players, Avalon Hill
Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow’s Walk expansion – All we can think about is The Witch from Left 4 Dead. You?
2) Cry Havoc
This game has been getting very strong reviews. I have not seen it yet but based just on what I have heard it has me eagerly awaiting its release. The game brings together some of my favourite game elements; area control, science fiction, asymmetrical game play, and miniatures. What more could a gamer want?
2-4 players, Portal Games
Cry Havoc… and let slip the dogs of war.
1) Star Trek: Ascendancy
Full disclosure, I love Star Trek. I love it. It is possible that I am just be excited to have another Star Trek game floating around. Should I get the chance I will buy it and add it to my Star Trek Fleet Captains, Star Trek Expeditions, Star Trek Attack Wing, and Star Trek Frontiers. I said I like Star Trek right? I am not just looking forward to another Trek Game, this game sounds like it actually embodies the universe well. It focuses on civilisation building and explorations with a healthy mix of science and battling. I cannot wait.
