Bomb Squad Academy card game TL;DR Review

Bomb Squad Academy card game by Tasty Minstrel Games TL;DR game review

Time is ticking rookies! A bomb is going to go off unless you bring your wire snips and do your job. If you haven't already guessed it “Bomb Squad Academy” is a game set around the theme of bomb defusal.

A card based game, Bomb Squad Academy is played over three rounds. Each round sees players cutting wires of different colors (green, blue, red, yellow) and hopefully not setting off the bomb they're working on. Players choose a card and place it face down in front of them, they're then revealed. You then check out the bombs that need defusing and work them in the color order dictated by the rules. Each snip brings with it points (generally speaking) and the bomb continues ticking, the timer moves lower, so it's closer to going off (yikes).

Part press your luck, part deduction, Bomb Squad Academy features a clever mechanic in that players don't know what the other players are doing until it’s revealed simultaneously. This means that more than one player might be working on the same bomb. There are a couple of special cards too and these change the regular gameplay round ever so slightly.

We enjoyed Bomb Squad Academy, it’s a fun little game, but we didn't love it. We think their are definitely better small box games available, particularly for two-players (where it was all a bit meh). That's not to say Bomb Squad Academy is a bad game, we just think their are better small games (ironically some of them also Tasty Minstrel Games).
